You might have noticed that you typed https://earthepiccalendar.com and ended up at https://calendar.pagan.eco. That’s because the Earth Epic Calendar now has a new name: The Eco-Pagan Calendar. However, Earth Epic can continue to be used as a name for the calendar as well. This is just one of several calendar overhauls for this coming year 11,727.
Change to the Quarters
We’ve reconfigured the quarters so that they start at 15° Scorpio, 15° Aquarius, 15° Taurus and 15° Leo. This puts the beginning of each quarter exactly at the cross-quarters of each year. Prior to this, the quarters were of equal length in the number of days except for Northlight and occasionally Westlight. But Northlight has 94 days to Southlight’s 88 because that’s the number of days required to travel between the cross quarters for those respective quarters.
We did this because it would make the calendar more accurate. The crossquarters set the season using solar timing, which is widely used in China and other parts of East Asia. And it’s a great way to educate people about the elliptical nature of Earth’s orbit around the sun.
Names for the Lunar Months and more
We also decided that the Lunar Months should have names instead of just number. We named them based on adaptations of the Zodiac sign. We discovered that while a lunar month could fall anywhere over a two month period, it turns out that a Zodiac sign could also because Western and Vedic astrology end up having the same signs 30° apart from each other because of the way each system addresses axial precession.
There are more Pagan traditions represented in the Eco-Pagan/Earth Epic Calendar this year–eighteen total in addition to the eight largest religions int he world. It has been a real challenge finding information on holidays for these traditions, and the accuracy of the sources aren’t always clear, so we have posted the sources of our information so that people may investigate them. If you have any concerns about the accuracy of any holidays, email us at calendarmaker@pagan.eco.
Where to buy the calendar
The Eco-Pagan/Earth Epic Calendar can be bought on Etsy, at https://earthepicresources.etsy.com. It is available as a digital download, and for the first time we are offering a print version of the calendar printed on 28 pound paper so that you have something sturdy to hang on the wall.
